We believe that Machiavelli’s main idea about human nature is the want for power and success and the need to maintain it. The whole reason that Machiavelli wrote “The Prince” was because there was a new leader named Lorenzo de Piero de; Medici. Once a new ruler took power in Florence everyone who worked for the old leader was out of a job and out of power. Machiavelli like many others wanted to win the new prince over. “Those who strive to obtain the good graces of a prince are accustomed to come before him with such things as they hold most precious, or in which they see take most delight…which I hold more dear then, or value so much as, the knowledge of the actions of great men.” Other philosophers had the same idea as Machiavelli but the reason his stood out was because not only did he write about whom to be a prince but also he wrote why. He understood the nature of man and applied it to ruling those very men.

We believe that Machiavelli made many strong arguments to support his view of the nature of man. In chapter seventeen called Concerning Cruelty And Clemency, and Whether It Is Better to Be Loved Than Feared; Machiavelli says it is better to be kind over cruel. But the most important thing is to maintain loyalty. “a prince, so long as he keeps in subjects united and loyal, out not to mind the reproach of cruelty; because with a few examples he will me more merciful tan those who, through too much mercy, allow disorders to arise…” Therefore a prince must maintain a balance of both kindness and cruelty.
